EU:s tidigare biståndskommissionär Louis Michel, som träffat Eritreas president Afewerki åtskilliga gånger, anser att han närmast är galen. Men kommissionens Eritreaexpert Jeremy Lester tycker ändå att EU gör rätt som utan villkor beviljar landet drygt 1.2 miljarder kronor i bistånd.

Det tycker däremot inte flera av de svenska EU-parlamentarikerna. Det framgick av ett seminarium och utfrågning om fallet Dawit Isaak som anordnades av Eva Britt Svensson, Olle Schmidt, Marita Ulvskog och Carl Schlyter i Europaparlamentet i Bryssel i onsdags.

peter englundA prominent Nobel Prize judge has urged Eritrea to release a Swedish-Eritrean journalist imprisoned there since 2001.

The Swedish Academy's permanent secretary Peter Englund says the African country should free Dawit Isaak. He was imprisoned there eight years ago after demanding press freedom.

hungerPresident Isaias Afwerki said Eritrea would not suffer from hunger and food shortages in 2010, a government website reported.
Hunger levels in Eritrea are ranked among the worst in the world by humanitarian organisations, with the agriculture-based economy affected by irregular rainfall.
But the president said Asmara would meet the demands of those regions hardest hit.
"The Government has drawn up plans towards ensuring no-hunger situation nationwide," the state website Shabait.com reported the president as saying.

dawit isaak med familjMore than 90 Swedish newspapers united Thursday in publishing a joint appeal on behalf of a Swedish-Eritrean journalist held in Eritrea for eight years without trial. Dawit Isaak was arrested on September 23, 2001 after the Eritrean government's moved to shut down independent newspapers. Thursday's publication marked Isaak's brief release on November 19, 2005 - but he was arrested a few days later. The appeal calling for the release of Dawit Isaak was written by Peter Englund, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy that awards the coveted Nobel Prize for Literature.

EU kommer att fortsätta ge Eritrea ungefär en miljard svenska kronor i bistånd, trots att Dawit Isaak och tusentals andra människor fortfarande hålls fängslade utan rättegång. I samma stund är det möjligt att Eritreas regim torterar Dawit Isaak.

This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson Andrej Mahecic to whom quoted text may be attributed at the press briefing, on 21 August 2009, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

We are shocked by the accounts we heard yesterday from five Eritreans who are allegedly the only survivors from a boat that set out from Libya over 20 days ago. They report that they were stranded at sea without fuel, water or food.
